Conyers Receives 2008 National Main Street Accreditation

The Conyers Main Street Program has been accredited as a 2008 National Main Street Program for meeting the commercial district revitalization performance standards set by the National Trust Main Street Center.

Conyers joins over 700 other Main Street revitalization programs begin recognized as 2008 National Main Street Programs.  Each year, the National Trust Main Street Center and its coordinating program partners announce the list of accredited National Main Street Programs around the country that have demonstrated their ability to follow the Main Street Program methodology.

“Being recognized by the National Trust Main Street Center is validation of our efforts in Olde Town Conyers through Conyers Main Street Program projects like the upcoming community art gallery and the expansion of the Thai Palace to a new location on Main Street,” said Mayor Randy Mills.

The National Trust Main Street Center works in partnership with Coordinating Main Street Programs throughout the nation to identify the local programs that meet the National Trust Main Street Center’s ten basic performance standards.  Conyers’ performance was evaluated by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs’ Office of Downtown Development, the coordinating organization for Main Street Programs in Georgia.

Since 1980, the National Trust Main Street Center has helped hundreds of downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts across the nation reclaim the unique quality of life that only a thriving community center can provide.  For more information on the National Main Street Program accreditation, visit www.mainstreet.org/nationalprograms

Conyers Introduces Residential Curbside Recycling Program

The City of Conyers is taking its efforts of “going green” one step further by introducing a new residential curbside recycling program to begin the week of July 14.

Partnering with local industry Pratt Industries, the City will replace one of its two weekly sanitation pick-ups with a recycling pick-up on either Thursday or Friday depending on pick-up schedules.  Residents will be supplied in the coming weeks, beginning the week of June 9, with a new 65-gallon, blue recycling cart and literature advising items that are accepted for recycling and those that are not.  City sanitation trucks will transport the recyclables to the Sigman Road Pratt Industries plant where the recyclables will be sorted and subsequently recycled.

“The beauty of the program is that it’s so convenient for our citizens to do their part and recycle,” said Mayor Randy Mills.  “We provide the list of items acceptable for recycling and all citizens have to do is place the recyclables in the container and put it out at the curb for pick-up—it is that easy.”

According to Director of Public Works and Transportation Brad Sutton, the recycling route is also expected to reduce the number of trips public works employees make four times weekly to Griffin, Georgia, to dispose of solid waste collected during residential sanitation routes.  A reduction in trips also means savings in terms of diesel fuel used.

“We are especially fortunate to work with a community and environmental partner like Pratt Industries in this new recycling effort,” said Mayor Mills.  “We hope the curbside recycling program will serve as a starting point for our citizens to look at additional ways to help our environment in their homes, businesses and community.”

Pratt Industries is the world's largest, privately-owned paper and packaging company with annual sales of more than $2 billion, and the only major paper company in the United States, which is 100% post consumer recycled.
